The First Steps: Setting Up and Learning the Ropes

Starting a flower farm from scratch meant diving into a steep learning curve. I had to figure out soil preparation, planting schedules, and pest management, all while balancing the demands of daily life. One of the biggest challenges was understanding the specific needs of different flowers, especially perennials. I quickly realized that patience is key—many perennials take time to establish before they truly flourish.

Blogging and vlogging about this process added another layer of complexity. Sharing honest updates meant being vulnerable about setbacks, but it also created a genuine connection with my audience. I found that people appreciated the mix of practical tips and personal stories, which helped me stay motivated.

Celebrating Successes: What Went Well

Despite the hurdles, there were many moments to celebrate. The perennials I invested in have thrived beautifully. Varieties like echinacea, rudbeckia, sedum and phlox have added rich textures and colours to the farm. Watching these plants mature and bloom season after season has been incredibly satisfying.

Sharing Through TikTok: Tips and Community Building

Creating TikTok tip videos has been a fun and effective way to share what I’ve learned. These short clips cover topics like planting techniques, seasonal care, and flower arranging ideas. The response has been encouraging, with viewers asking questions and sharing their own experiences.

For the second year, I plan to expand this content by including behind-the-scenes glimpses of daily farm life, troubleshooting common problems, and showcasing new flower varieties as they bloom. The goal is to keep the content relatable and useful, helping others feel confident in their own gardening or flower farming efforts.

New Perennials and Future Plans

Looking ahead, I’m excited to introduce some new perennials to the farm. These include varieties known for their resilience and long blooming periods, which will enhance the farm’s diversity and appeal. I’m particularly interested in adding more native species that support local pollinators and wildlife.

This year i will launching the wildflower pick-your-own patch. This idea came from wanting to create a space where visitors could connect directly with nature and take home a piece of the farm. As when i opened up my patch for pick your own became popular, with families and flower lovers enjoying the freedom to choose their own bouquets. It’s rewarding to see how this simple concept brings joy and supports sustainable flower picking.

The wildflower pick-your-own patch will also grow along side some of my favourite annual varieties . I plan to expand the area and experiment with different seed mixes to create a more dynamic and colorful display throughout the seasons. This will provide visitors with fresh options and keep the farm lively year-round.

Lessons Learned and Tips for New Flower Farmers

Reflecting on this first year, a few key lessons stand out:

  • Start small and build gradually. It’s tempting to plant everything at once, but focusing on a manageable area helps you learn and avoid overwhelm.

  • Document your journey. Whether through blogging, vlogging, or social media, sharing your progress keeps you accountable and connects you with a supportive community.

  • Invest in quality perennials. Choosing healthy plants suited to your climate pays off in the long run.

  • Create interactive experiences. The pick-your-own patch has been a great way to engage visitors and add value to the farm.

  • Stay flexible and patient. Weather, pests, and other factors will challenge you, but adapting and learning from each season is part of the process.

Looking Forward with Excitement

The first year of flower farming has been a mix of hard work, learning, and joyful moments. I’m grateful for the support from my audience and the opportunity to grow something beautiful and meaningful. As I move into the second year, I’m eager to deepen my knowledge, expand the farm, and continue sharing this journey with others.
